Paolo Russo was born in Napoli (Italy) in 1958. He graduated in Physics magna cum laude at the University of Napoli "Federico II", where his academic career took place. Since 1984 a researcher of Medical Physics at the Faculty of Medicine, in 1992 he was appointed Associate Professor of Physics at the Faculty of Science. From 2001 he is Full Professor of Medical Physics at University of Naples Federico II. His scientific activity is entirely in the field of Medical Physics, specifically in two main areas: the development of systems for medical imaging based on semiconductor detectors, and the application of Optics to biomedicine. Since 1988 he collaborates to national funded by the Vth Commission (technological) of INFN. In collaboration with A. Del Guerra and W.R. Nelson, P. Russo has extended the use of the EGS4 Monte Carlo code to low-energy X-rays, for the simulation of materials response for diagnostic radiology (10-100 keV). He built the first device for dosimetric measurements with X-ray beams that employs optical fibers (1993), and the first fiber-optic based device for monitoring low-energy proton beams (1994). He was project leader in the development of the first system for digital autoradiography based on double-sided microstrip detectors (1996). With the Napoli research group, he assembled and tested the first system for digital autoradiography based on pixellated semi-insulating GaAs and then Si detectors (1999), bump-bonded to the photon counting VLSI chip named Medipix1. In 1996-1999 he co-founded the Medipix1 European Collaboration (CERN, Univ. Glasgow, Freiburg, Pisa, Napoli) for the development of hybrid pixel semiconductor detectors for medical imaging applications, and in 2000 he co-founded, as a representative of Napoli University, the Medipix2 collaboration, with many European research Institutions. Recently he was interested into small animal imaging research with radioactive and fluorescent markers; with his research group, he realized the prototype MediSPECT/FRI for SPECT imaging and fluorescence reflectance imaging in small animals. The MediSPECT system is based on CdTe detectors readout by Medipix2 photon counting readout circuits, coupled to high resolution collimators. Since 2006 he is actively involved in the realization of a cone-beam X-ray breast micro computed tomography prototype, and in phase-contrast breast CT with synchrotron radiation, in projects funded by INFN.
In 2000-2006 he was the Coordinator of the interdisciplinary activities of the Napoli Section of INFN (Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics), and as such, a member of the National Scientific Committee V of INFN. From the Executive Board of INFN he was nominated member of the National Committee for Technological Transfer (2003-2006). From XVIII to XXII cycle year he was in the Board of Teachers of the International PhD Course "Innovative Technologies for Materials, Sensors and Imaging", which he contributed to establish. In 1997-2000 and for the period 2006-2009 member elected of the Executive Board of the Department of Physical Sciences of Napoli University. Since 2002 he has been a teacher of Radiological Physics and Medical Imaging at the School of Health Physics at Napoli University. From 2002 to 2007 he has been participating in the activities of the Campania's Region "Center of competences for "New Technologies for Productive Activities", participated by all Universities and Public Research Institutes present in this Region: he has been nominated Official Representative of INFN in the Board of Directors of this Center. From 2008 to 2010 he was nominated as INFN representative in the Administration Board of the Technological Transfer Company"Nuove Tecnologie s.c.a.r.l.". From 2008 he is Associate Editor for the Medical Imaging area of the journal "Physica Medica: European Journal of Medical Physics", and he has been nominated Editor-in-Chief of this Journal for the period 2013-2018. He served as referee for several scientific journal in the field of medical physics. From 2001 to 2009 he was a Lecturer at the Medical Computing week at the European School of Medical Physics in Archamps, France. From 2013 he is member of the Publicationc Committee of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). He has been nominated as IOMP representative in the Board of Directors of the International Medical Physics Certification Board for the period 2016-2018. He co-authored over 120 papers on international peer reviewed journals and scientific book chapters, and about 100 communications to international conferences.
